January Playlist

 Howdy!

This year, I'm going to do monthly playlists! Sometimes, they'll be themed. But mostly, like this month, they're just my recent favorites. I have a habit of replaying a playlist over and over and over again, so I hope this feature will help me to find a new set of songs every month. Hope you like these tunes as much as I do!

You Really Got A Hold On Me by She & Him on Grooveshark

What songs have you been into lately?

Tunes Tuesday // Pop Songs on the Radio

   Hello!

This week, I decided to dedicate Tunes Tuesday to my favorite pop/pop-y songs on the radio right now.  I don't listen to any of this stuff when it's not on the radio (minus No Doubt, Matchbox Twenty, and One Direction), though, but these are my favorite songs that play on the pop station.
P.S. That Taylor Swift song is super catchy. I really don't like Taylor Swift because she never shuts her mouth in every/any advertisement she's in for whatever reason, but I do really like this track.
P.S.S. Some of these take a few extra seconds to start. Don't give up.

Some Nights by fun. on Grooveshark
Want U Back by Cher Lloyd on Grooveshark
Tongue Tied by GROUPLOVE on Grooveshark
She's So Mean by Matchbox Twenty on Grooveshark
Everybody Talks by Neon Trees on Grooveshark
One Thing by One Direction on Grooveshark
We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together by Taylor Swift on Grooveshark
Settle Down by No Doubt on Grooveshark

What are your favorite songs on the radio right now?

Stuff Lately // 8.26.12

 Hello!

N'SYNC dolls at the thrift store. I wanted Justin but if I bought one I couldn't just not buy the rest.

If you've been a regular reader during the summer months, you'll notice I've seriously slowed down posting since that easy livin', warm weathern' time. This is just due to lack of time. So no worries, I'll still be posting a lot, just not everyday. I mean, where else will I post my sweater and pumpkin-scented candle emotions this fall? Like, duh.
Anyway, here's some stuff that I've been into/doing since those lost days of summer.

Watching: I just watched last week's Copper on BBC America; not too bad so far. Finally watched Midnight in Paris last night!! Serious wanderlust. :( Oh, and Perks of Being a Wallflower and Hotel Transylvania look like the best movies of the season, caaaaannn't waaaaait!! They're out in September.

Reading: Troy by Adele Geras; Masquerade by Walter Satterthwait (I just found out it's a freaking sequel, but I already started reading it, so.)

Eating: IHOP has Red Velvet Pancakes now. You can bet your buttons I went as soon as I found out.

Doing: Taking care of Walton. Remember? My baby cactus has been losing its baby leaves (what are they called?), so I've been watching him very carefully. Also: thrifting!! First few times since December; it's good to be back! haha. Oh, and I've set up a mini art wall above my TV!! I'll post print/picture details in an upcoming post (full of Etsy art I wish I had. holla.)

Listening: "First Day of My Life' by Bright Eyes is freaking fire. And 'Skinny Love" by Bon Iver, man. Oh, and "100 Years" by Five for Fighting may not be the newest song ever but I've just started listening to it obsessively and it makes my heart hurt.

Buying: This exact scarf from Target (omg it's called menswear inspired why do I always love boy things omg). It's so cute and I found all these new (to me) ways to wear it! Yaay!! Oh, also: Booties! I finally picked up a precious pair of booties at this store A'gaci (if you look it up, note: I don't usually shop there, but it was by F21 so I figured I'd run in and see if they had any cute booties. I feel like I'm saying booties a lot. Booties.) Now I'm all set for fall!

 Pancakes, Walton, Booties, Art wall.
Ignore that Cheer bear okay it's from the glory days 1st grade.

What've you been up to lately??

Tunes Tuesday /// fun. Edition

   Hello!

Remember my new feature, Tunes Tuesday? Weeeelll, this week is fun. themed! You've almost undoubtedly heard "We are Young", maybe even "Some Nights", on the radio, but what about the other songs on their album? Since fun. is my second favorite band ever (behind Coldplay, tied with Mumford & Sons), I decided to make sure I'm not the only one who knows them past their #1 singles. These are my favorites (excluding "Some Nights") off their newest CD.

All Alright by fun. on Grooveshark

Out On The Town by Fun. on Grooveshark

One Foot by fun. on Grooveshark

Tunes Tuesday (+ Introduction) /// Favorite Songs

  Howdy!

Ever since summer started, I've been all over Pandora. Nonfreakingstop. In doing so, I've found some killer songs! Which inspired me to have a new feature: Tunes Tuesday! Yaaaay! It might not be every week, but I'll try to make it as often as possible (proof being the fancy little logo guy up there!).
A lot of these songs will probably be ones I've been listening to for a while, then some others will be straight out of  Pandora's box radio. I'll try to have five, give or take a few, every week. I won't be making it in the style of a playlist, because whenever I see a playlist rather than an individual player, for some reason, I've found I'm less likely to listen to whatever's on it (and also I think it looks cooler this way :). And I'm using Grooveshark because, unlike something like Spotify, you don't need an account to listen.
Oh, and these don't have a theme. They're just my favorites of right-this-second.
Okay, with all that explained, let's get this partay started!

Somewhere In Brooklyn by Bruno Mars on Grooveshark
When Did Your Heart Go Missing by Rooney on Grooveshark
Five Years Time by Noah and the Whale on Grooveshark
Young Folks by Peter Bjorn And Jon on Grooveshark
Nighttiming by Coconut Records on Grooveshark
Nothing Matters When We're Dancing by The Magnetic Fields on Grooveshark

Speaking of music, did you hear about Mumford & Sons releasing a new album?! AHHH!!

What are your favorite songs right now?

The Top 3 Record Stores in Nashville

  Hello!

Did you know there's a national thing called Record Store Day? There is (well, was, back in April)! Thanks to the (sort of really crappy) app, I found all the record stores participating in Nashvegas-- basically, the top/main shops were the only ones listed: The Groove, Grimey's, and The Great Escape. I was lucky enough to (have a mom that would be willing to) swing by each one, and they definitely differed in some respects.

 BEST :: The Great Escape
This place is stellar. It's so roomy and has so much music! Unlike the other two, this place wasn't crawling with obnoxious/rude hipsters. Everyone was amicable and mellow, it seemed. My Record Store Day visit was actually my second; the first time around I got a Muse poster and a Maurice & The Zodiacs record (thanks for the obsession, Dirty Dancing)... This was actually the only store I was able to purchase anything at, as everywhere else was sold out of just about everything. As for the store on any other day, the selection is still incredible -- and they have posters! And plenty of CDs, of course, as well as comic books, DVDs, and all kinds of memorabilia. Basically, this is the place to be for records.

 MIDDLE :: The Groove
When I first got here, I had a mini anxiety attack: I had never seen so many hipsters in my entire life. I was so intimidated that I wanted to leave, like, immediately. My outlandish reaction to such cool(??) people is a good start-off for a therapy session, so I'll end here. When we got there, there was a sort of little party in the back outside, with boxes and boxes of $1 records leading to it, so that's where we started. I won't count that in the rating, because that was just some RSD celebration. When we got inside... that place was cramped, man! Not as bad as the backyard of it was, but sheesh! The prices were good, and everyone was really friendly. I guess it's your typical young-person-run record joint. Oh, and I noticed a rad collection of cassettes, too, which I didn't see much of anywhere else.

  WORST :: Grimey's
If I thought the last place was cramped, I was wrong -- this was the definition of smushed in. It's a good thing my claustrophobia isn't severe, because there was barely breathing room. I had to rub up on some very undesirable people. We asked about the RSD exclusives (that's why we came!) and the very friendly, if not totally swamped, cashier directed us to the back. We opened the back door to some blaring music, stepped on the deck... and I almost died. There were SO MANY PEOPLE! We made our way down, and the RSD exclusives were in the blue tent... The blue tent with a massive outside-the-store-grounds line leading to it. (?!?) No other place had a set-up like that. Then, the actual people around were so rude! Dirty looks and pushing and shoving and asdhajh! Rudest "chill" people ever. That, the way the limited records were presented, and the basic cramped-ness of the place give it it's low rating. Anyway, we ended up not standing in line after discovering there was no way to cut everyone. As it turned out, after more research, some pretty cool bands have played at Grimey's, like The Black Keys, Foster the People (!), and Mumford & Sons (!!!) way back in 2010.

Those are the main three record stores in Nashville, but not the only ones.

McKay's: This place is so freaking cool; it's, like, one of my favorite places ever. It's a mecca for books, movies, and music (my three favorite things!). I haven't been to their new location since moving, but I'd bet it's just as great as the old one.

New Life Record Store: This place is literally across the street from The Great Escape. It's pretty cool, in my opinion, though I've never found any records for myself there. I guess I should mention/warn about the wide collection of porn and drug paraphernalia in the back...But still, it's a local little record store, if not one that's a total hole-in-the-wall.

Ernest Tubb Record Shop: Pretty much hick city. It's on The Strip, which is what I call the only road tourists visit Nashville for in the first place. It's got some gift items, but mostly just country records.

My all-time favorites are The Great Escape and McKay's (though it's usually just best for books and movies). If I left off a record shop, let me know!

What's New?

----Originally posted to Teenage Times on 3/7/11----

Hey there.
(In case you’ve never heard of this thing called the past, that little coo coo rhyme is a lyric from the Beatles.)
Allllllrighty then! <—As you just read, I’ve been watching Ace Ventura lately. That rhino scene will change your life. Anyway, I recently got some mail. Hoorah! It’s my Doc Martens all the way from Europe.

No heel, no bulkiness = perfection only Doc himself can achieve.

They’re called Shoreditch/Eclectic Leather (holla!) Dr. Martens. I had to import them due to the lack of awesomeness(/leatherness) that U.S. online stores have available. I ordered them from KBK Shoes. These guys were on sale, alas, shipping wasn’t cheap(shipped next day without special payment; took around six weekdays to arrive). Since U.K. sizes are different, I ordered a size 4(I’m regularly a 6 – 6 1/2). If I’m wearing socks(I usually am…) and the laces are tied, they fit nicely. Oh, I also definitely suggest buying leather–it’s five dollars more expensive, but leather lasts longer and all your mud-n’-diseases from everyday adventures wipe off a whole lot easier. I won’t do a review, since I’m so biased about these.
Moving on, there’s not much new I have to say. I haven’t been doing much shopping, so no item reviews. I haven’t had many free days, so no blog-worthy adventures. Due to this coolness-lacking, I’ll share with you some recent discoveries of things that I’m currently digging.
  •   The word deck. It’s rad-person speak for cool(“Dude, that’s totally deck!”).
  • The band Mumford & Sons. It sounds like some furniture company from the South. However, it’s the coolest rock-folk-alternative band on the circuit right now. (Download “The Cave” and, if you’re looking for folkier, download “Winter Winds“.)
  • The TV show Chuck. Um, adorably kickass.
  • The book Red Riding Hood. Sounds totally lame, but if you want to see the movie, check it out. What intrigues me? The book was based on the screenplay, not vice versa. Or, if you can’t wait till the movie, read the last page–everything you need to know, right there. (:
  • The prehistoric Brontosaurus. What’s not to love?
To makeup for my extreme lack of posts last week, I’ll try to post in a day or two. Alrighty, then.
  xoxo,
    Zoe
